Romans 12:2 says, "Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind..." (NASB). There is a lot to unpack here. I want to speak specifically to the "transformed by the renewing of your mind" part. The message is that we are not perfect. We are all a work in progress. Scripture uses "renewing" of one's mind, indicating this is a current, ongoing process for God's people. It does not say "renewed" (past tense) as if the process is past tense as if we have attained a level of never needing to improve. With Christ, we all have room to grow. Now, what is Scripture indicating that we are renewing? It is our mind that requires transformation. Yet, thinking differently after many years of doing what is comfortable is extremely difficult. To renovate and rebuild your mind despite pain, grief, trauma, betrayl, disappointment is impossible with Jesus Christ and his living Word. Many think if you move, maybe a change in scenery or a fresh beginning in a new land will be the meaningful change we seek. We think that we will receive the renewal we desperately seek if we change geography. This could not be further from the truth. We can take some time off from work, go on a vacation, and be temporarily rested and recharged. Still, if you do not renew your mind and view your circumstances through a spiritual lens, your weariness will return with twice the gravity pull it had before. We will face the same energy as before when faced with the same situations. True transformation is only accomplished through renewing our minds in Jesus Christ. Put Jesus first and not the things of the world, and we will begin to see this transformation process by renewing our minds.
